Trainer Profile: Tony Wakefield (Training Director)

Tony is head of the Informa Telecoms Academy and has overall responsibility for developing the telecoms training business within the Informa Telecoms & Media group. He has been a full Member of the Institute of Leadership and Management since 1995.

He started his career in 1981 with British Telecom (BT) where he built an excellent foundation in telecommunications. He gained a BT university award to study at Loughborough University of Technology in the UK where he gained a BSc in Electronics and Physics.

After University, Tony spent a number of years as a Royal Navy helicopter pilot, including as part of the flying training organisation – giving him an excellent insight into high quality competency-based training methods.

He returned to telecoms in a training role in 1996, taking up his current position with Informa in 2000. He trains worldwide across a wide range of subjects including in-depth engineering training, and telecoms management training – amongst other training roles he is a Programme Director on the Advanced Telecoms Management programmes, including the well-known Telecoms Mini MBA.

Tony has been instrumental in developing customised Training Programmes for  telecoms companies worldwide. These programmes combine the best of technology training with the required business skills needed to implement them in the most efficient manner. Many of these programmes blend traditional classroom-based training techniques with online delivery methods.

He has worked with a wide range of companies including Vodafone, MTN, ZAIN, ATOS, Nokia, Vodacom, O2, Orange, Motorola, Orascom, Wind, Etisalat, STC and Viva. This has enabled him to build an excellent understanding of the industry – both business and technology.

With his engaging style of training, he is able to draw on this knowledge and experience to deliver complex concepts with clarity – quickly building up a full picture to ensure a complete understanding of the subject – whether technology or business oriented.
